About Cirencester Train Station

Opened in 1841 as the terminus of the Cheltenham and Great Western Union Railway, Cirencester station served this important Cotswold market town until its closure in 1964.

The impressive stone built station reflected the towns wool trade prosperity.

Though demolished in 1970, the station site remains visible and heritage railway proposals continue to advocate for restoring this lost link to the "Capital of the Cotswolds." Cirencester represents how even significant market towns lost their rail connections during the Beeching cuts.
